Frankfurt Hahn Airport (D)German state considering sale of struggling Hahn airport

RTL Today
Whilst Frankfurt Hahn Airport is Germany's fifth largest airport for transporting goods, the airport has been in the red for some time.

The airport was owned by the German state and had been in the red for some time but is now in private hands, the HNA Group.

It is also a difficult situation for the airport’s employees: according to their trade union, employees are suffering from an enormous amount of psychological pressure caused by this sense of uncertainty.

If the airport were to close, around 2,500 employees would lose their jobs. Local businesses surrounding Frankfurt Hahn Airport would also suffer.

The airport is Germany’s 11th largest airport in terms of the number of passengers who pass through. In 2015, the airport transported around 80,000 tonnes of freigh and nearly 2.7 million passengers.
