On Friday and Saturday, the spring congress of the German Society of Forensic Medicine was held at the National Health Laboratories (LNS) in Dudelange. This was a first for Luxembourg Forensic Medicine, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. While consumption has not increased significantly, Luxembourgers still smoke a lot. The Grand Duchy is in the top 20 on a European level.
A3 DISRUPTION - As part of ongoing works, motorists are advised to plan for delays as roadworks will take place near Livange on the A3 until Saturday, June 22. As part of the widening project for the A3, roadworks began at the Livange interchange on Sunday at 1am and, according to the National Roads Administration, will commence for the next 6 days. This will cause traffic complications for cross-border commuters traveling to and from France.
ROAD INCIDENTS - On Saturday night several road-related incidents were recorded by police.
Shortly before midnight, a motorist took the right of way from a police unit near Hierheck on the N12. The police officers stopped the man and discovered that he had already driven into a road sign before this incident. He was tested, and his positive alcohol test resulted in his driving licence being revoked.
A little later, a police patrol noticed a driver driving at 150 km/h instead of the permitted 70 km/h through a roadworks on the A3. The officers stopped the man and checked him. An alcohol test returned a positive result and his driving licence was confiscated.
And at 5.00 am, a motorist drove through a red light on Route d’Arlon in Luxembourg City. Not only had he been drinking, but he also did not have a valid driving licence. On top of this, his vehicle was neither correctly registered nor insured. The vehicle was seized by order of the public prosecutor and a report was drawn up.
FRENCH ELECTIONS - On Monday, France began less than a fortnight of frenetic election campaigning for snap polls called by President Emmanuel Macron to combat the far right, with star footballer Kylian Mbappe warning the country was at an historic crossroads. Candidates had until Sunday evening to register for the 577 seats in the lower house National Assembly ahead of the official start of campaigning from midnight, for the June 30th first round. The alliance led by centrist Macron, who called the snap polls some three years early after the far right trounced his party in EU Parliament elections, is still lagging way behind with little chance of winning an outright majority itself. The decisive second round of voting takes place on July 7th.
UKRAINE CONFLICT - World leaders on Sunday backed Ukraine’s independence and territorial integrity, and the need for eventual talks with Russia on ending the war -- but left the key questions of how and when unresolved. More than two years after Russia invaded, leaders and top officials from more than 90 states spent the weekend at a Swiss mountainside resort for a two-day summit dedicated to resolving the largest European conflict since World War II. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky hailed the diplomatic “success” of the event, to which Russia was not invited. He added that the path was open for a second peace summit, with a view to ending the war with a just and lasting settlement.
ISRAEL/GAZA CONFLICT - Israel’s military has announced a temporary ceasefire following an attack that claimed the lives of eight soldiers. This pause comes amidst growing international concern over humanitarian conditions in the besieged Palestinian territory. Gaza saw its first day of relative calm in months on Sunday, after Israel’s military said it would “pause” fighting daily around a southern route to facilitate aid flows. AFP correspondents in Gaza’s north and centre reported no fighting on Sunday morning, though they reported some shelling and at least one strike in Rafah and an air strike in central Gaza during the early evening.
FOOTBALL - In yesterday’s games at Euro 2024, Group D saw the Netherlands record a 2-1 victory against Poland. In a game whose build-up was marred by the Hamburg police having to shoot a man yielding an axe and threatening police before hand. Meanwhile, in Group C, Slovenia and Denmark played out a 1-1 draw and England defeated Serbia 1-0.
GOLF - At the US Open Rory McIlroy suffered a late-round collapse on Sunday keeping him from snapping out of a 10-year major win drought. The 35-year-old from Northern Ireland declined to speak with reporters after faltering in the final round at Pinehurst, making three bogeys in the last four holes and helping hand the victory to Bryson DeChambeau.
RUGBY - on a very windy day in Cessange, Rugby Club Luxembourg were up for the challenge in the 2nd Bundesliga play-off match, as they beat RSV Köln 33-14. The victory now elevates them to the highest level of German rugby for next season.
The week begins with quite an abundance of clouds and a chance of light, drizzly showers across the start of the day. Morning temperatures are anticipated to be between 13 and 16°C.
Afternoon conditions call for partly cloudy skies with patches of sun breaking through. Perhaps these are the four hours we’re looking for? Mid-day temperatures will range from 18 to 22°C.
The evening stays warm, with temperatures dropping imperceptibly to 17-20°C. However, moderate to heavy showers are more likely in the latter half of the day, so grab a light rain jacket if you’re catching the Euros at an outdoor venue — or enjoying a mud-walking, forest jaunt on this balmier-than-usual evening.
And, to boot, anticipate a light to moderate breeze (10-20 km/h) throughout the Grand Duchy this Monday, growing just a bit more quiet as the evening unfolds.
