To comply with European law, France recently abolished the limit of 200 cigarettes, or one carton, that a smoker was allowed to bring in from another EU country. And customers habe been quick to come and take advantage of this windfall... and some even come from very far away.

A 38-year-old woman from Normandy was thus stopped on the A4 by the Val de Briey gendarmes on Sunday night. On board her vehicle: around 36 kg of tobacco (25 cartons of cigarettes and over 30 kg of rolling tobacco). A total of €5,500 worth of tobacco bought in Luxembourg, according to France Bleu.

Unfortunately for her, there are still limits to importing tobacco into France: the tobacco purchased must be for personal consumption only. Already known to the police for similar offences, this woman will now be summoned to appear before the courts. The tobacco intended for resale has been seized.
