Ahead of the EU elections, the lead candidate of the European social democrats said that it is evident that we need such a tax if we want to reach the sustainability targets of the United Nations.
Frans Timmermans highlighted this in an interview with the Rheinischen Post. For instance in the domain of transport of buildings, a CO2 tax could provide an incentive to change to electric cars or to support the energy-oriented refurbishment of buildings.
Nevertheless, such a tax should be socially responsible.
