
TUNNEL CLEANING - From today, the larger tunnels in the country are being cleaned. Twice a year tunnels are cleaned and safety installations are checked. The vast majority of the work is done at night to keep the impact on traffic as small as possible but there will be part-time closures of the 25 tunnels in the coming weeks. The campaign runs until June.
SPACE RESOURCES WEEK - The 6th edition of the Space-Resources Week is taking place here in Kirchberg from today until Wednesday. For 3 days, the event brings together more than 500 experts from space research, scientists and space agencies, such as NASA. Hoping to find safety in Luxembourg, Inna was preyed upon, exploited and abused, emotionally, physically, by the person who had offered to be her host.
MOSCOW ATTACK - The four suspected gunmen in the Moscow concert hall attack have appeared in court, accused of committing terrorism. 137 people are confirmed to have been killed. Images shared appeared to show the men from Tajikistan looking badly beaten. They were remanded in custody until the trial in May.
Last night, France raised its security alert status to its highest level in response to the Moscow attacks. With four months to go before the Paris Olympics, Prime Minister Gabriel Attal said the decision was taken “in light of the Islamic State’s claiming responsibility for the Moscow attack and the threats weighing on our country.”
ISRAEL-HAMAS WAR - The UN agency for Palestinian refugees, UNWRA, has said Israel won’t approve its aid deliveries in Northern Gaza. UNWRA’s head Philippe Lazzarini described the move as outrageous. There has been no response to the claim from Israel.
Today in New York, the UN Security Council will vote on a new draft resolution on an “immediate” ceasefire in Gaza. At that moment, Israel would have no other option but to implement such a resolution under international law and Hamas would have to finally release all the hostages who are still in their power. However, it is still not certain that such a resolution will pass.
IRELAND TAOISEACH - Simon Harris will become Ireland’s youngest prime minister at 37, after the leadership race in his party ended without any other candidates coming forward. The leadership became vacant after the taoiseach, Leo Varadkar announced his surprise resignation last week.
PARIS WAITERS - Visitors to central Paris were treated on Sunday to the sight of hundreds of aproned waiters surging through the mediaeval streets, in a one-of-a-kind race designed to show off the profession months ahead of the Olympic Games. Men’s winner Samy Lamrous and top waitress Pauline Van Wymeersch walked the two-kilometre route in 13 minutes 30 seconds and 14 minutes 12 seconds respectively -- each carrying a tray with a croissant, espresso and glass of water. The prize for the winners is a night’s stay in a swanky hotel.
FORMULA 1 - Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz surged to victory at the Australian Grand Prix on Sunday to snap Red Bull’s winning start to the season after three-time world champion Max Verstappen sensationally failed to finish. The Spaniard took the chequered flag 2.3 seconds ahead of teammate Charles Leclerc, with McLaren’s Lando Norris a bold third.It was his third grand prix win and first since Singapore last year.
MOTO GP - Motorcycle fans in Portimão witnessed a surprisingly frantic end to MotoGP’s main event on Sunday, with crashes and malfunctions shaking up the race. Jorge Martin hit the front in the first lap and never relinquished his lead to win the Portuguese MotoGP, in the second race of the season. Martin took top spot in the standings from champion Francesco Bagnaia who crashed out after a collision with Marc Marquez in the wild final stages.
TENNIS - Andy Murray exited the Miami Open for the final time on Sunday and in characteristic style he did so with a performance full of grit and skill but also plenty of passion. The two-times Miami winner who will be 37 in May, lost out in a thrilling third set tie-break to Czech Tomas Machac, managing to battle on after receiving treatment for an ankle injury.
In the women, world number one Iga Swiatek kept her nerve to beat 26th-ranked Linda Noskova of the Czech Republic 6-7 (7-9), 6-4, 6-4. Swiatek’s closest challenger, Aryna Sabalenka, has been knocked out of the tournament.
In the morning, a blanket of mist is covering a sizeable portion of the country, before giving way to high clouds, which will allow some sporadic visits from the sun. After a cold start of around 0-1°C, the temperature will slowly rise up to 9-11°C by the afternoon, before dropping a few degrees in the evening.
