LUXAIR PROFIT - Luxair has reported a profit of €1.5 million for 2022. Despite the after-effects of the pandemic and soaring fuel prices due to the war, the airline had higher passenger numbers and more destinations. The most popular destinations are in France, followed closely by Portugal and Italy.

BANK OF AMERICA - Bank of America has announced the opening of a branch here in Luxembourg, praising the Grand Duchy as a country with “many opportunities”. The Bank’s Luxembourg-based clients primarily consist of investment funds.

GREENS 40 - The Green party celebrated its 40th anniversary last night at the Trifolion in Echternach. Leading candidate Sam Tanson said the party just wanted a free, just, feminist and climate-neutral world but that society does not have 40 more years to realise what is still necessary to do.

TRUMP CNN - Donald Trump has demeaned the writer E Jean Carroll during a live television broadcast, a day after a civil case found he had sexually abused and defamed her. During a question & answer session on CNN with mainly Republican supporters in the audience, Trump also repeated the claims the last election was stolen from him and called the host ‘a nasty person’ for questioning him. He also talked about Ukraine, declining to say who he wanted to win the war.

G7 FINANCE - Support for war-torn Ukraine will top the agenda at G7 finance talks today, but ministers and central bankers will also weigh concerns ranging from banking uncertainty to US debt default fears. The talks in the coastal city of Niigata in Japan are a chance to set out a vision for financial stability before G7 leaders get together next weekend in Hiroshima.

GERMANY PLOT - In Koblenz, a trial begins today against 5 people who wanted to plunge Germany into chaos. The group are among the so-called Citizens of the Reich (Reichsbürger) movement, who wanted, among other things, to provoke a nationwide power outage, kidnap the Minister of Health Karl Lauterbach and instigate countrywide unrest. What sounds like something out of a film turned out to be relatively real, according to the indictment. Firearms, ammunition, gold bars and foreign currency were among things found by police during raids of their homes last year.

Sports

FOOTBALL - Inter Milan took a first small step towards the final with a 2:0 success against AC Milan yesterday in the Champions League. The return leg will be played next week in Milan. The winners of the tie will face holders Real Madrid or Manchester City in the June 10 showpiece in Istanbul. The first leg of that semi-final finished 1-1 in Spain on Tuesday.

CYCLING - In cycling, Australian Kaden Groves won a ferocious sprint at the end of a rain-soaked and crash-filled fifth stage of the Giro d’Italia on Wednesday as Andreas Leknessund retained the overall lead and favourite Remco Evenepoel fell twice. Stage 6 continues today from Naples, 162 km and back.

2024 OLYMPICS - France’s famous gastronomy will be put to the ultimate test when organisers of the 2024 Paris Olympics have to feed 15,000 athletes. Around 40,000 meals a day will be served during the Paris Olympics, using produce largely sourced in France. Some 6,000 people will be employed to help in the restaurants. Games organisers have made no secret of what they will be serving up: more vegetables than usual with an emphasis on locally-grown products. Of the estimated 13 million meals that will be served during the Olympics and Paralympics, from a snack right through to a dish cooked by a top chef, the goal is to have produce that is 80% French.

Weather

Similar to yesterday, today will predominantly bring overcast skies with occasional rainfall. The sun will definitely peep out from behind the clouds here and there, but a raincoat is recommended for those leaving the house. Morning temperatures of 7-9°C will rise to 14-16°C in the afternoon.
