Investigators speaking to the media on Thursday said the fire could have been caused by an electrical fault, although the prosecutor’s office made it clear that the exact cause of the fire had not been confirmed.
The full extent of the damage caused by Monday night’s fire is yet to be evaluated, due to the unstable condition of the building constituting a safety hazard to investigators.
More than 400 firefighters were involved in handling the fire and rescuing the building’s structure. The restoration is expected to take 5 years, with donations currently at around 900 million euros.
