Dozens of farmers arrived in tractors to slow down circulation at Geric roundabout in Thionville on Tuesday morning.
Images from the event depict around 25 tractors participating in the demonstration. The protesters initially blocked one of the two lanes at the roundabout, before police intervened to cut off traffic and forced other motorists to avoid the manifestation.
Despite this, the protest unfolded peacefully, with both police and protesters observing a minute’s silence in homage to the victims of the attack on Paris police earlier this week.
Further demonstrations have been organised across the region and the rest of France by farmers hoping to alert the French government to the growing difficulties experienced by those in the profession. In particular, protesters have taken aim at so-called “agri-bashing”, which damages their image on a regular basis, as well as commercial accords regarding the importing of foods, and the distorting of competition which is slowly damaging French agriculture.
Further south, French newspaper Est Républicain indicated there would be a filter dam set up near the Gye toll on the A31. Protesters are equally present in Metz at the roundabout near Queuleu prison.
