
CAHEN RESIGNATION - It was Corinne Cahen’s last appearance in the Chamber yesterday as Minister for Family Affairs and Integration. She is taking over a mandate in Luxembourg City and has therefore resigned from the government. It could be announced later today, who will take over her position. The Democratic Party, the DP is holding a press conference this evening.
KIRCHBERG DEVELOPMENT - A development plan for a new housing project, with a focus on affordable housing in Kirchberg has been presented to the public. Located in close proximity to the Philharmonie and the European Parliament, JFK Sud will be built on an empty site adjacent to Boulevard Kennedy. Construction is expected to continue for the next five years. According to the ministries, approximately two-thirds of the project will consist of rental and affordable housing, with 60% designated for rental purposes. The remaining 40% will be dedicated to affordable housing for sale.
PETROL PRICE - Unleaded petrol has dropped by 4 cents per litre from midnight. From today, unleaded petrol (95) costs €1.561 per litre, while super unleaded (98) drops 3.7 cents to €1.773 per litre. Diesel stays stable at €1.434 per litre. Heating oil has dropped a couple of cents to €0.864 per litre for 50ppm.
FALCONS RESCUE - A Gasperich resident has provided refuge for three baby falcons. Just before heading out to his local polling station on Sunday, Anthony Jacopucci was surprised to discover three fledgling falcons just outside his home. After calling the wildlife care centre, he constructed a small shelter for the baby falcons at a safe height. Now, the falcons have found their new home on the first floor of the house, occupying a spacious windowsill. According to Jacopucci, the mother falcon regularly visits to feed her offspring.
TRUMP INDICTMENT - Donald Trump has given a defiant speech to supporters after his second court appearance in three months. The former US President pleaded not guilty to 37 charges, relating to mishandling of sensitive files. He called it an evil and a misuse of power and attacked his political opponents.
BERLUSCONI FUNERAL - Today is the state funeral for former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi in the Duomo cathedral in Milan. Berlusconi died on Monday at the age of 86. Thousands of people are expected to come and watch the funeral, which will be shown live on big screens in the square. Among the mourners are Italian President Mattarella and Prime Minister Meloni. It is not clear which current or former world leaders will be present at the ceremony, which starts at 3pm. Berlusconi was the longest-serving premier in Italy’s post-war history and also Italy’s richest man with a colourful private life. He is survived by his 33-year-old girlfriend, Marta Fascina and five children.
NIGERIA ACCIDENT - Over 100 people have drowned and several others are missing after an overloaded boat capsized in Nigeria’s north central region. The wooden boat was ferrying people across a river after a wedding ceremony in neighbouring Niger state when it capsized.
PUTIN UKRAINE - Russian President Vladimir Putin has claimed that Ukraine’s casualties in its counteroffensive are ten times higher than Moscow’s even as Kyiv said it was making gains and “moving forward”. His assessment came hours after Russia claimed it had captured Western armoured vehicles from Kyiv’s forces on the battlefield.
FOOTBALL - Tonight sees the first semi-final game in the UEFA Football Nations League. The Netherlands will play against Croatia at 9pm. Tomorrow is the match between Spain and Italy.
And this Saturday 17 June, Luxembourg is playing Liechtenstein in the UEFA Euro 2024 qualifiers at the Stade de Luxembourg. Kick off is at 3pm.
ICE HOCKEY - The Las Vegas Knights are the American champions. They beat the Florida Panthers 9-3 to clinch the NHL Stanley Cup for the first time.
CYCLING - Thibaut Pinot, who followed his announcement that he will retire after this season with a spectacular Giro d’Italia, has been selected for the Tour de France by his team. It will be Pinot’s 10th appearance in the race. He finished third in 2014.
