Nigel Farage and his Brexit party MEPs turned their backs during the playing of the European anthem at a ceremony to mark the opening of the European parliament.
A rendition of Beethoven’s Ode to Joy, the Parliament’s unofficial anthem, was played to mark the start of the 2019 to 2024 session.
As musicians recited the piece, those in attendance from the Brexit Party, faced the back of the room in Strasbourg.
The Brexiteers (as they are oft referred) carried out the protest as Ode to Joy played on Tuesday morning to open the new parliamentary session.
Mr Farage said the party had “already made its presence felt”, as he shared a picture of its members on Tuesday.
The council’s nominee for European Commission president will have to go be put before the parliament, who can accept or reject it with a majority vote.
