The incident took place around 12.20pm in a residential area.
Several people have suffered injuries and emergency services are still looking for other victims, police spokesman Willem Migom said. Police are at the scene with sniffer dogs to find the people that are still unaccounted for.
Antwerp mayor Bart de Wever tweeted that it had been a “terrible gas explosion.” The fire service said it was still unclear what caused the explosion.
