As countries continue to impose tests and restrictions on travellers from China, the European Union has started working on a monitoring system for covid variants, says German health minister Karl Lauterbach.

The German health minister, like his peers from the European Health Authorities, does not see a need for a general testing requirement for travellers from China.

On the other hand, monitoring variants at airports would be useful, especially given little reliable data is currently being published by the Chinese government.

Both Italy and Spain announced travel restrictions for travellers from China on Friday. They will have to either present a negative Covid-19 test or be fully vaccinated.

Similar restrictions were introduced in the US, Japan, India, South Korea and Israel.
