BrusselsEU leaders name Germany's Von der Leyen candidate for President of European Commission

After days of stalemate, EU leaders have decided in Brussels on Tuesday evening. Ursula von der Leyen has been nominated to head up the European Commission.

Donald Tusk announced on Twitter that the group of European leaders agreed on candidates for the top positions.

Charles Michel of Belgium has been put forward to lead the European Council. German defence minister Ursula von der Leyen has been nominated to lead the European Commission. Josep Borrell Fontelles is candidate for High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Christine Lagarde was nominated as candidate for President of the European Central Bank.

It is not yet known who will be vice president of the Commission.
