
CAUGHT SPEEDING - A driver of a Luxembourg-registered car has been caught travelling 211 km/hour by German police. The police radar spotted the Luxembourger going more than double the 100 km/h speed limit - on a section of the A1 motorway towards the Grand Duchy, just before the Sauertal bridge. According to the German police, the driver now risks a three-month driving ban, a €700 fine and two points removed from his driving licence.
SATELLITE INVESTMENT - Luxembourg’s Ministry of Defence is investing in tactical military satellites in the context of the war in Ukraine. Luxembourg will purchase capacities worth €195 million from the telecommunications network provider SES over the course of the next ten years, which can be used for tactical and military purposes. The US Department of Defence will join the project as a strategic partner and the door is also open to other NATO members.
SPEED CAMERAS - Last year, a good 310,000 motorists were flashed on our roads. The record for fixed speed cameras is held by Schieren with around 39,500 violations. The speed camera in the Markusbierg tunnel even flashed 74,000 times. These figures were provided by Transport Minister Francois Bausch.
NORTHERN IRELAND DEAL - The UK and EU have reached a deal after months of talks over post-Brexit trade rules for Northern Ireland. The so-called “Windsor Framework” comes after a final day of talks between British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Windsor yesterday. The plan is aimed at easing customs, equalising tax rules across the UK and giving Northern Ireland’s lawmakers more of a say over the future. Speaking at a joint press conference, Sunak called it “a decisive breakthrough”. The Windsor Agreement will now needs to be backed by lawmakers on both sides of the Channel.
TURKEY QUAKE - At least one person has died and dozens have been injured in a 5.6-magnitude earthquake in the southeastern Turkish province of Malatya. Thirty buildings also collapsed during this aftershock of the violent earthquake that hit Turkey and northern Syria on February 6.
FINLAND NATO - Finland kicks off a parliamentary debate aimed at accelerating the country’s bid to join NATO today, increasing the likelihood it will leave neighbour and military partner Sweden behind. Spooked by Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine, Finland and Sweden dropped their decades-long policies of military non-alignment and applied to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in May last year.
FOOTBALL AWARDS - Argentina and Paris St Germain forward Lionel Messi is the men’s player of the year at the 2022 Best FIFA Awards. The 35-year-old beat French forwards Kylian Mbappe and Karim Benzema to the prize. Barcelona’s Alexia Putellas was named women’s player of the year. The Brazilian football legend Pele, who died last year, received the honorary award.
TENNIS - Novak Djokovic has surpassed Steffi Graf’s record for the most weeks as world number one after entering a 378th week at the top of the men’s rankings. Serbia’s 22-time major winner has held the record for the most weeks as the men’s world number one since March 2021. Germany’s Graf won 22 Grand Slam singles titles between 1987 and 1999 and was top of the women’s rankings for 186 consecutive weeks.

Skies will be sunny throughout. Morning temperatures start off below freezing at -4 to -2°C, before climbing slightly to 3-5°C in the afternoon.
