According to local media, the man, a resident of Fontoy near Hayange, opened fire on police outside his home on 14 May. The authorities responded in kind, resulting in the man’s death.
Local news outlets France Bleu and the Républicain Lorrain have both reported that the man had suicidal tendencies. His family members had alerted police of the man’s intention to end his life. When the police patrol arrived, the man exited his home with a weapon and shot at the attending officers.
