In the German municipality of Wiefelstede, a lorry driver came off the road at a bend and collided with a tree.

Oldenburg police said the 52-year-old was intoxicated at the time of the crash, with a blood alcohol level of 4.1 promille, an extremely high and dangerous level. As he is not resident in Germany, a provision of security was issued.

The lorry lost much of its cargo as a result of the crash, as 22 tonnes of melons spilled on to the road. The route was closed for eight hours, with the damages expected to cost at least six figures. After police operations concluded, they permitted passersby to help themselves to the leftover melons.

The driver is now under investigation for endangering road traffic.
