On Friday evening, the French St Avold gendarmerie wrote about the incident on their Facebook page, pointing out the driver was going at 235 km/h instead of 130 km/h.

On Thursday, the officers were carrying out speed checks on the A4 motorway from Paris to Strasbourg near the town of Longeville-les-St Avold. The tally of confiscated driver’s licenses lay at two.

The first motorist had a provisional license and was caught out at 161 km/h rather than the permitted 110 km/h. The second motorist - a Strasbourg native in a German sedan - was caught speeding at a staggering 235 km/h instead of 130 km/h.

The police intercepted the man near the toll barrier by St-Avold, where he came up with a rather tall tale to justify his excessive speed. He told the police he was speeding because ‘he had to return home quickly because his wife was at the point of giving birth’.

Whether this wife was in labour or not, the police officers were unimpressed and both drivers had to call somebody to come get them after their licenses were withdrawn.
