Staff at the German railway network went on strike from 2am on Thursday morning, demanding improved wages and working hours. The Deutsche Bahn strike is expected to last around 35 hours, ending on Saturday afternoon.
As a result, there are no trains running between Wasserbillig in Luxembourg and Wittlich, while train connections between Luxembourg City and Trier to Koblenz are currently unavailable. More details are available on the CFL website.
German transport minister Volker Wissing acknowledged there were reasons behind the strikes, but accused the GDL union of showing a lack of interest in finding solutions. The government declined to intervene.
Lufthansa’s ground staff also organised a warning strike in favour of better wages and working conditions on Thursday, grounding 90% of the airline’s flights until Saturday morning. Security staff at Frankfurt and Hamburg airports opted to join the protest, leading to a full cancellation of flights.
Luxembourg’s Findel airport has been impacted by the strike action, cancelling Luxair flights to Munich and Hamburg on Thursday morning.
