FUEL PRICES - Fuel prices have jumped up again. 98 super unleaded petrol has gone up by 1.5 cents to €1.80 per litre, while diesel has increased to €1.57 per litre. Heating oil will also become more expensive, industrial and agricultural petrol will also see price increases.

FRANC BANKNOTES - Two decades after the euro was introduced, there are still hundreds of thousands of banknotes belonging to the old currency in circulation in the Grand Duchy. At the end of 2022, some 864,000 francs were still circulating in the form of banknotes, worth around 5 million euros. Franc notes can still be exchanged at the Central Bank of Luxembourg.

BIRTHDAYS - On this day, three years ago, Luxembourg became the first country in the world to make transport free. According to the Ministry of Transport, 22.1 million passengers used public transport last year.

TRAIN ACCIDENT - Two trains have collided head-on in Greece killing at least 32 people and injuring 85 late last night. An intercity passenger train travelling from Athens to the northern city of Thessaloniki crashed into a cargo train at high speed outside the city of Larissa. The cause of the deadliest rail crash in Greece in decades remains unclear.

NIGERIA ELECTION - Nigeria’s ruling party candidate, Bola Tinubu has won the presidential election in Nigeria. Tinubu, a former governor of Lagos state, will take over leadership of Africa’s most populous country and the largest oil producer in Africa. The challenges are great: such as massive inflation, corruption and Islamist insurgencies.

COVID LAB LEAK - FBI Director Christopher Wray has said his agency believes the Covid-19 pandemic was “most likely” caused by an incident in a laboratory in Wuhan, China. The comments come after a report earlier this week said the US Department of Energy had determined that a leak from a Chinese lab was the most likely cause of the Covid-19 outbreak.

LIECHTENSTEIN NEWSPAPER - And Liechtenstein’s oldest newspaper is closing after 145 years. The Liechtensteiner Volksblatt, founded in 1878, is to call time in March because of a drop in subscriptions and advertising revenue in the Alpine microstate of 39,000 inhabitants, between Switzerland and Austria. Chief executive Lucas Ebner said that after years of an often exhausting struggle for survival, it was clear the time had come to cease operations.

EXERCISE HEALTH - A large study has found that one in 10 early deaths could be prevented if everyone engaged in a small amount of daily exercise such as a brisk 11-minute walk. Physical activity is known to reduce the risk of heart disease, cancer and other leading causes of death, but exactly how much is needed to have an impact has been unclear. 75 minutes a week, or less than 11 minutes a day could prevent one in 10 of those deaths, according to the latest information published in the Journal of Sports Medicine.

FOOTBALL FFF - Noel Le Graet will continue to work for FIFA’s office in Paris despite standing down as French Football Federation president yesterday, after months of allegations about his behaviour. 81-year-old Le Graet, who has faced allegations of sexual and psychological harassment, will, according to several members of the FFF’s executive committee maintain his links with FIFA.

TENNIS - Rafael Nadal will miss the ATP 1000 events at Indian Wells and Miami, the 22-time Grand Slam champion confirmed on social media yesterday. The news comes after the Spaniard said in late January he expected to miss six to eight weeks with the hip flexor injury he sustained at the Australian Open. The news comes as Australian star Nick Kyrgios has withdrawn from the same tournament after failing to recover in time from knee surgery.

Weather

Following in the same vein as Monday and Tuesday, today will once again be bright and blustery, with winds reaching up to 50 km/h in some areas as the day wears on. Temperature-wise it still isn’t exactly warm, starting off at -2 to 0°C in the morning, then climbing to 4-6°C in the afternoon.
