Police reported the discovery on the A320 motorway between Freyming-Merlebach and Forbach between 6.30am and 7am, Républicain Lorrain reports.

The identity of the victim was confirmed on Monday afternoon. It was the body of a 64-year-old woman who lived in Cocheren, a neighbouring town beside Freyming.

According to the public prosecutor of Sarreguemines, Olivier Glady, the woman had previously been hospitalised with acute depression at the CHS in Sarreguemines. The victim had made several suicide attempts in the past.

An investigation was opened to determine the circumstances of the death, but the prosecutor believes “the body was hit”.

No damaged vehicle was found nearby. The victim’s vehicle, meanwhile, was found in a parking lot a few hundred meters from the body.

Part of the highway was closed to traffic mid-morning.
