A video posted on social media shows the beginning of the altercation. When the lights turned green, the motorist tried widening the distance to the cyclist, who in return followed and held on to the vehicle.
“What we are seeing in those images is very dangerous. We are not going to judge the rest, but it is true that it is spectacular. It is not everyday that someone tries holding on to a car, which is dangerous. We can be happy that there were no grave consequences”, stated Lien Depoorter, spokesperson of the Bruges police.
After holding on to the motorised vehicle for about one kilometre, the cyclist eventually let go and suffered a fall. He escaped unhurt, but his safety shoes were destroyed in the process. In conversation with VTM, the cyclist later shared his intention of wanting to stop the driver from crossing over to the cycling lane.
“Shortly after the incident, the driver and cyclist were interrogated by the police. We will now be able to learn more about the fight, we have the images and the statements. We will assemble all the pieces of the puzzle”, added Lien Depoorter.
The prosecutor’s office will decide whether or not the case should go to court.
