According to the mayor, out of the 1.500 reported cases in Russia, 1.000 are said to have contracted the virus in Moscow.

Shopping centres, restaurants, bars and larger parks have been closed since Saturday. Russian president Putin has also ordered a week off work, but has not yet taken any further measures.

According to experts, however, the measures currently in place will do more harm than good, as people are increasingly going to the country side to visit family or the black sea to be on the beach.

Sotschi, on the other hand, has heightened the measures by announcing that during the work-free week hotels are not allowed to rent out rooms, and bookings that had already been made have to be cancelled. In addition, a large number of charter flights have since returned to Moscow.
