LUXEMBOURG SMS ALERT - Tests of the population alert system continue in parts of the country today – text messages will be sent to mobile phones in the municipalities in the east of Luxembourg – from Biwer, Contern, Dalheim and Manternach to most of the Moselle villages such as Remich, Schengen and Grevenmacher.

The Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume, Deputy Prime Minister Paulette Lehnert and Economic Minister Franz Fayot are on a working visit to the United States until Thursday. The focus is on health technologies. They will also attend the “Luxembourg-American Business Award” in New York, which this year goes to the chemical group DuPont, which wants to increase its site in Contern.

COP 27 EGYPT - The United Nations annual climate change conference has begun in Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt. For the first time, delegates have agreed to discuss whether richer countries should compensate poorer ones, after a year of extreme weather disasters. An alarming UN report said the past eight years are on track to be the eight warmest on record, with an acceleration in sea level rise, glacier melt, heatwaves and other climate indicators.

UKRAINE ENERGY - The mayor of Kyiv, Vitali Klitschko has asked residents to make preparations to leave the city in case of a total electricity blackout. It is estimated that about 40% of Ukraine’s energy system has been damaged or destroyed in Russia’s attacks, targeting vital infrastructure. In his nightly video address, President Volodymyr Zelensky said more than 4.5 million people were already without power.

ITALY MIGRANTS - Humanitarian groups have said Italy has broken international law by refusing 250 people to disembark two migrant ships. Children and people with medical issues were allowed to leave the ships in Sicily, but others were not. Two other rescue boats remain at sea. Italy’s new far-right government has promised to crack down on migrants travelling across the Mediterranean.

US MIDTERMS - In the United States, the Democratic and Republican parties have intensified their campaign efforts in the final run up to Tuesday’s mid-term elections. The votes are seen as crucial both for President Biden and his pre-decessor Donald Trump. Polls put Republicans well ahead in the fight for the House of Representatives and also show them gaining momentum in the Senate, as voters, riled up by culture wars around gay rights and abortion, seek to take out frustration over high inflation and rising illegal immigration.

US LOTTERY - The US Powerball jackpot has grown to a staggering $1.9 billion -– the largest prize in world history -– after yet another week without a winner, ensuring a new surge in lottery fever across the country. With no ticket matching the five numbers on Saturday, the pot rolls over with a grand prize of $1.9 billion up for grabs in tody’s draw.

FOOTBALL RESULTS - Swift Hesperange is the new table leader in Luxembourg. This after a 4-0 victory against Dudelange last night. Other football results include – Union Berlin lost 0-5 against Leverkusen in the Bundesliga, and in the UK, Arsenal remains leader, following a 1-0 victory over Chelsea.

CYCLING SCHREIBER - At the Cyclo-Cross European Championship yesterday in Namur, the Luxembourgish cyclist Marie Schreiber came fourth in the U-23 category.

TENNIS PARIS MASTERS - Danish teenager Holger Rune shocked six-time champion Novak Djokovic to clinch his first Masters title in Paris on Sunday after coming from a set down to win 3-6, 6-3, 7-5. Rune, 19 years old, became the youngest winner of the Paris tournament since an 18-year-old Boris Becker in 1986. He is the fifth first-time Masters winner this season and will be the first Danish man to break into the top 10.
