Around 100 activists in white suits blocked the departure of private aircraft by sitting around their wheels.

The protest was part of a broader day of action at Schiphol on pollution caused by the aviation industry, reports Reuters.

Dewi Zloch, campaign leader for Greenpeace Netherlands, said “we want fewer flights, more trains and a ban on unnecessary short-haul flights and private jets.”

No disruption was reported to commercial flights.

Schiphol is the Netherland’s largest source of CO2 emissions, according to the organisation, with annual emissions of over 12 million kilograms.

A representative of Schiphol Airport said that the hub plans to be carbon neutral by 2030, while supporting net zero aviation by 2050.

Responding to the action on Twitter, Dutch actor Katja Herbers described the activists as ‘heroes’.

The activists were arrested by Dutch military police, who are responsible for policing the site.
