Following the emergency call reporting the incident, multiple accounts were received, including reports of a physical altercation.
Responding officers arrived at the scene to find a group of approximately 50 enraged individuals obstructing the entire roadway. Amidst this agitated crowd, emergency responders discovered the severely injured child and promptly administered first aid.
Based on the ongoing investigation, a 23-year-old man from Saarbrücken was driving his car in the left lane, intending to travel from the city centre towards Völklingen. According to uninvolved witnesses, a white van halted on the right lane near a zebra crossing, despite the traffic lights displaying a green signal.
At that moment, three children crossed the road in front of the van, disregarding the red light.
Unfortunately, the motorist was unable to spot the children in time, resulting in a collision with a 9-year-old boy. The impact propelled the child onto the car’s bonnet before being thrown back onto the road.
Preliminary findings indicate that the child sustained serious injuries but is not in a life-threatening condition. Meanwhile, the driver himself became the victim of an assault shortly thereafter.
Exiting his vehicle to check on the child he had struck, the driver was unexpectedly attacked and physically assaulted by a male assailant. Consequently, the driver also required medical evaluation and was transported to a hospital.
Authorities have initiated investigations into the attacker.
To facilitate evidence collection, the affected section of the road had to be closed for approximately 90 minutes, leading to traffic diversions.
Seven police patrols, two ambulances, and an emergency doctor were deployed during the incident.
