VideoBritish synagogue arsonist who set himself on fire locked up in hospital

Far-right extremist Tristan Morgan set fire to a synagogue in 2018. He has been locked up in a UK hospital indefinitely.

Exeter resident Tristan Morgan’s plan to set a local synagogue on fire backfired when he took the violent blast of the explosion in his face.

The incident dates back to 21 July 2018 when Morgan poured petrol into a window of the religious building before setting it alight. The Jewish community commemorated the Holocaust on that day. According to BBC, he had already previously admitted arson and terrorism-related charges and was well-known for what prosecutor Alistair Richardson called his ""deep-rooted anti-Semitic belief” and “desire to do harm.”

Relieved Policing Commander Matt Lawler explained that it was “sheer chance” that nobody had been inside the building when Morgan set fire to the synagogue. He added that Morgan produced songs “exhorting others to violence” against the Jewish community and was in possession of material that “revelled in the degenerate views of Nazi Germany and white supremacists”.

Morgan was given an indefinite hospital order at the Old Bailey in London last Friday. If released, Morgan, who is currently of no fixed abode, will be permanently monitored by police.
