Christophe HansenBrexit extension deemed necessary

RTL Today
Since British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has tested positive for the coronavirus, all other political processes will be on the back burner.

As corona chaos reigns, the current Brexit date looms ever closer.

In theory, the United Kingdom left the European Union this year. However, while the British Prime Minister no longer sits on the European Council, EU law is still in effect and Westminster still has to pay in to the EU-budget. These activities should cease come end of the year, as the EU and the United Kingdom should have come to terms on a new trade deal by then.

Luxembourgish EU deputy Christophe Hansen (CSV) acts as rapporteur for the deal in the European parliament, and has expressed the need for an extension. The year-long extension, a necessity from the get-go, was necessary to allow for some breathing space, according to Hansen.

On the British side, no similar statements have been made, and it is worth remembering that Boris Johnson’s election campaign rested on the promise to have the Brexit process sorted as soon as possible.

A no-deal Brexit still remains a possibility.

A high number of trade associations are also reported to have called for an extension.
