Delegates from around the world are gathering in Bonn to address key issues ahead of this November’s United Nations climate conference in Antalya, co-hosted by Turkey and Australia. Central topics on the agenda include strategies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and defining the future framework for international climate finance. The two-week negotiations will lay the groundwork for the Antalya summit, where governments are expected to agree on more ambitious climate action.
In the run-up to the talks, UN climate chief Simon Stiell called for “maximum progress” during the Bonn sessions. Environmental organisations have also urged the international community to make decisive commitments to strengthen climate protection measures. They are particularly pressuring negotiators to accelerate the global phase-out of fossil fuels. Additionally, campaigners stress the urgent need for increased support for countries most affected by climate change, both to help them adapt to shifting conditions and to compensate for climate-related damages.
