
GREENS ELECTIONS - Elina Pinto from Luxembourg was not elected as top candidate for European Greens in the upcoming European elections. The German Member of the European Parliament (MEP) Terry Reintke will lead the Greens, receiving 55% of the vote. The other two candidates Latvian Elina Pinto who has been working for the European Commission in Luxembourg since April 2023 and the Italian Benedetta Scuderi received around 24% and 20% of the votes respectively. The European elections are taking place on 6-9th June.
GARE PROTEST - 200 people marched for more security in the Gare district on Saturday. Among the demonstrators were residents, politicians, and merchants from both the city and the railway station, all united in demonstrating and advocating for increased security measures. Their demands included an increased police presence, 24/7, seven days a week.
YOUNG SCIENTISTS - Two young Luxembourgers have won prizes at the Taiwan International Science Fair. The judges awarded a 4th prize in the “Computer Science and Information Engineering” category to 17-year-old Krzesimir Hyzyk, and a 3rd prize in the “Mathematics” category to Steve Mendeleev (19). TISF is one of the most prestigious competitions for young scientists.
ISRAEL-HAMAS WAR - US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is kicking off another Mideast crisis tour today in a bid to secure a new truce in the Israel-Hamas war. He is expected to discuss a proposed truce thrashed out in a Paris meeting of top US, Israeli, Egyptian and Qatari officials. The truce would pause fighting for an initial six weeks as Hamas frees hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners. The diplomatic push has become more urgent with the surge in attacks by Iran-backed groups in solidarity with Hamas, triggering counterattacks by the US.
CHILE FIRES - At least 112 people have been killed by forest fires in Chile’s Valparaiso region. It is believed to be Chile’s deadliest forest fire on record. Many of those affected were visiting the coastal region during the summer holidays. Rescue services have struggled to reach the most badly affected areas and the government expects the toll to swell in the coming hours.
PARIS PARKING - Parisians have voted in a referendum to triple parking charges for visitors driving Sports Utility vehicles into the city. Parking an SUV in Paris for 6 hours will cost as much as €225. The proposal was put forward by the city’s authorities.
GRAMMY AWARDS - The US rapper Killer Mike has been taken away in handcuffs from the Grammy’s music awards in Los Angeles. He just won 3 of the 4 rap categories. According to police, he was detained over a physical altercation at the event. Bille Eilish’s Barbie song ‘What was I made for?’ has won song of the year. Taylor Swift clinched her fourth Album of the Year Grammy, making history as the artist with the most wins in this category.
RAPE TRIAL - Brazilian footballer Dani Alves, a former star at Barca and PSG, goes on trial in Barcelona today accused of raping a woman in a local nightclub. Prosecutors are asking for a nine-year prison sentence, followed by 10 years of conditional liberty. They are also asking he pay 150,000 euros in compensation to the woman.The trial opens at 9 am GMT and is due to wrap up Wednesday.
FOOTBALL - Inter Milan has beaten Juventus 1-0 and move four points clear of their closest rivals for the Scudetto. Arsenal beat Liverpool 3-1 in the English Premier League. With this, Arsenal moves within two points at the top of the table. In the Spanish league, Read Madrid and Atletico have drawn 1:1.
FIFA has announced the 2026 World Cup final will be held at MetLife Stadium in New York. The New York bid held off a strong challenge from Dallas to secure the July 19 game, the culmination of the expanded 48-team tournament being co-hosted by the USA, Canada and Mexico.
OLYMPICS HEAT - Organizers of the upcoming Paris Olympics are on high alert as a recent climate study has unveiled the potential for a record-breaking heatwave, surpassing the extremes of the summer of 2003. Operational teams have run simulations looking at the consequences of shifting some outdoor events to earlier or later start times to avoid the midday heat.The athletics events, particularly the marathon, as well as tennis or beach volleyball are all seen as being vulnerable to the effects of punishing sunshine and high temperatures.
CYCLOCROSS - On Sunday, five Luxembourgers participated in the Cyclocross World Championships in Tabor, Czech Republic. Despite her notable achievements throughout this Cyclocross season, Marie Schreiber fell short of securing a medal in the U23 race. The Luxembourgish champion had to settle for a disappointing 5th place.
