71-year-old Plaxedes “Gogo” Dilon was no stranger to walking long distances. To make ends meet, the widow woke up early every morning to travel across the region and sell clothes.
When cyclone Idai caused large-scale destruction in a neighboring region, she decided to trek several miles to the Highlands Presbyterian Church and donate some of her clothes to the victims of the natural disaster.
Her touching act of kindness has caught the attention of the Zimbabwean billionaire Strive Masiyiwa. Moved by Gogo’s compassion, the wealthy telecom executive promised to build her a home - wherever she wants in the country. On Facebook, he said that her efforts were “one of the most remarkable acts of compassion I have ever seen.”
He also said that he would pay her $1,000 per month for life so that she could live comfortably.
