FARMER PROTESTS - Following farmer protests in France, now Belgian farmers have announced that they want to take to the streets. As a result, the Luxembourg-Belgium border region and the motorway towards Luxembourg will be affected. A blockade has been set up at the Weyler interchange near Arlon from 6 am this morning, so traffic in the direction of Luxembourg can be expected to be disrupted.

French farmers will launch an indefinite “siege” of Paris beginning today, choking off major highways and moving toward the capital as they demand better working conditions.

MONTENEGRO VISIT - The Prime Minister from Montenegro is on an official visit to Luxembourg today. Milojko Spajic will be met by Luc Frieden at Senningen Castle for talks, as well as by Chamber President Claude Wiseler. They are expected to sign a bilateral non-double taxation agreement. Montenegro is still an official EU accession candidate.

ARMY MODERNISATION - The Luxembourg army is embarking on a transformative journey marked by increased manpower, upgraded equipment, and a new flagship mission with NATO - signalling a notable rise in its military capabilities. According to General Steve Thull, the army is poised to conduct manoeuvres at battalion level within the next decade. In this context, the army will acquire tanks for the first time.

EUROVISION TALI - In an unforgettable evening at the Rockhal, Tali Golergant was crowned winner of the Luxembourg Song Contest. The 23-year-old will be heading to Malmö in May to represent the Grand Duchy as it returns to Eurovision after a 30-year absence. Presenting team Désirée Nosbusch, Melody Funck, Raoul Roos and Loïc Juchem accompanied their Luxembourgish and international audience through 2.5 hours of musical entertainment on this historic evening for Luxembourg.

World

DRONE ATTACK - President Biden is coming under pressure to retaliate, following a drone attack on a military base on the border between Syria and Jordan, in which 3 troops were killed. More than 30 others were injured. Biden blamed Iranian backed militants for the attack. Iran also supports Hamas in Gaza and the Houthis, who have been firing missiles at ships in the Red Sea.

ISRAEL-HAMAS WAR - Israel says negotiations in Paris to secure a truce and the release of hostages, held by Hamas have been constructive but significant gaps still remain. Representatives from Israel, the US and Qatar also discussed ways to a permanent resolution to the conflict.

GERMANY VOTE - The far-right AfD party suffered a narrow electoral defeat on Sunday after huge protests swept cross Germany against the anti-immigration group over revelations of debates about mass expulsions of immigrants. A candidate from the mainstream center-right CDU won a slim victory over an AfD challenger in a run-off in eastern Thuringia for a district administrator post. Over a million people have marched in recent days in protest at the Alternative for Germany party and hundreds of thousands poured into the streets again on Saturday and Sunday.

EVERGRANDE LIQUIDATION - The world’s most indebted property developer Evergrande has been told it has to liquidate in Hong Kong’s high court. The ruling is likely to send shockwaves through China’s struggling property sector.

Sport

NFL - In American football, after two dramatic games last night, the Super Bowl match-up will see the Kansas City Chiefs defending their title against the San Francisco 49ers. The Super Bowl is taking place in Las Vegas on February 11.

FOOTBALL - In Sunday’s games in the German Bundesliga, Dortmund won 3-1 at home against Bochum and Union Berlin beat Darmstadt 1-0.

In France, PSG drew 2-2 with Brest. And in Belgium, Union St Gilloise with Luxembourg’s national goalkeeper Anthony Moris also played 2-2 in Anderlecht.

HANDBALL - France is the European champion. In the final in Cologne last night, France defeated world champions Denmark 33-31 after extra time. Bronze goes to Sweden, who beat Germany 34-31.

TENNIS - Jannik Sinner stormed back from two sets down to beat Daniil Medvedev in an energy-sapping five-set Australian Open final on Sunday, claiming his first Grand Slam title.The Italian fourth seed had no answer to the Russian’s aggression in the first two sets but dug deep to win 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 in three hours and 44 minutes.

It’s going to be a dry day with clouds up high. Although the morning might be a little cold at 0-2 °C, the temperature should warm up to around 8-10 °C by the afternoon.It’s the perfect conditions for enjoying our projected 5 hours of winter sunshine outside. By night, temperatures maintain themselves at around 5-7 °C.
