The device in question was observed at a depth of about three metres, around forty meters from the coast, said local paper La Vanguardia.
According to sources within the Guardia Civil, the item could be a relic from the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s.
As a precautionary measure, officers set up a large security perimeter around the beach, asking bathers to leave the area for several hours. The operation involved the Guardia Civil and the Guardia Urbana.
After the evacuation of the beach, experts were sent on site to examine the device, determine if it was explosive and, if necessary, disable it.
The Guardia Civil (Civil Guard), a police unit with military status, was busy in the early afternoon trying to locate the suspicious item.
