
Söder explained that too many differences tended to confuse the public, thereby weakening acceptance of Covid restrictions. He said the best option would be a uniform approach across Europe, but that he would support border controls if the former could not be implemented, pointing out that closing Germany’s border had been a success in terms of reducing the virus spread in spring 2020.
However, residents and businesses situated in border regions are unlikely to share Söder’s views, with many objecting to the closures last year.
Germany has strengthened its restrictions recently for incoming travellers, both by air and by car and train. Health Minister Jens Spahn said on Monday that people arriving in the country would need to take a test, including cross-border workers.
