At least 18 people have died in a serious road accident in Egypt, with many children and teenagers among the victims. According to doctors in the region, two pickup trucks carrying agricultural workers collided on Tuesday in the northern region of Ismailia. Most of those killed are believed to have been children aged 13 or 14.

Egypt's Health Ministry reported a total of 47 casualties, including around 30 people who were injured. According to media reports, the youngest victim was just 10 years old.

Fatal road accidents occur frequently in Egypt, in which victims are often minors who are transported to work in overcrowded vehicles.

According to official figures, at least 1.3 million minors in the country are required to work. It is also estimated that between 8 and 13 million people in Egypt work as day laborers, not only in agriculture but also on construction sites and in manufacturing.
