The last in a series of fires occurred on Saturday night in the surrounding region of Aboncourt. Waste had caught fire and the flames quickly spread to surrounding areas. The result: countless firefighters battled the flames on a 500m2 surface.
Although there is not direct link between this fire and the scorching temperatures that had a stranglehold on France and its neighboring countries last week, other fires were a direct result of the heatwave.
Last Saturday, seven hectares of a field were ravaged by a fire in Metzervisse. A local home close to the field had to be evacuated by the gendarmerie. An orange alert was consequently issued for the entire department.
Similar story last Friday. The mercury hit a scorching 40°C and several other fires haunted the region. Firefighters received more than 600 calls and embarked on 41 interventions. A total of 332 firefighters were mobilised between 11am and 7pm alone. One fire burned down close to 150 hectares on a wind farm in Ottange. Luxembourg’s firefighters assisted their French colleagues in the fiery fight against the flames.
