According to the Républicain Lorrain, the motorist struck a bridge in a full-frontal crash as he was travelling in the direction of Metz-Longwy.
The driver, who was the sole occupant of the car, was trapped in his vehicle until the emergency services arrived to free him from the wreckage. He was taken via helicopter to Nancy to be treated for serious injuries.
Initial reports from the scene suggested the driver was speeding at the time of the crash. The authorities are expected to confirm in due course.
