
According to the investigators, the 20-year-old driver caused the accident when he tried to evade a speed camera in Stolberg, near Aachen.
The young man was driving well above the speed limit on the country road in nocturnal conditions. At one point, he brusquely entered the opposite lane in a breakneck attempt to avoid a speed camera, resulting in a collision with a second car in which a mother was traveling with her 16 and 17-year-old children.
It remains unclear whether the mother or the older son was driving when the accident occurred.
According to the police report, the driver of the second car attempted to pull to the left in order to avoid collision. The 20-year-old driver, unfortunately, did the same thing and the two cars violently collided head-on.
After the crash, the family car caught fire with the three passengers still inside.
A 21-year-old woman lost her life in the other car. A second 22-year-old passenger succumbed to his injuries two days later.
The driver responsible for the crash and a 20-year-old woman survived the accident with severe injuries.
