For the second night in a row, air traffic at Munich Airport has been brought to a halt following a new string of drone sightings.

Around 6,500 passengers were affected by the incident, with many forced to spend the night at the airport. After Frankfurt am Main, Munich is the second-largest airport among Luxembourg’s neighbouring countries.

According to police reports, drones were spotted over both the northern and southern runways shortly before 11pm on Friday night. They disappeared almost immediately, making formal identification by authorities impossible. It remains unclear whether the airport will resume normal operations on Saturday morning.

While air traffic was initially scheduled to restart at 5am, this did not happen. Throughout the morning, announcements indicated that flights will cautiously resume from 7am onwards. However, a Munich Airport spokesperson warned that delays would likely persist throughout the entirety of the day.

The Lufthansa flight from Luxembourg to Munich scheduled for 9.50am was among those affected. According to Lux-Airport, the flight was cancelled as the aircraft was unable to depart from Munich earlier that morning. Luxair’s 11.10am flight and Lufthansa’s 8.10pm flight to Munich were, however, still listed as “scheduled.”

Similar drone-related incidents have recently been reported in Oslo and Copenhagen. While it remains unclear who is behind these disruptions, security concerns remain high amid ongoing global tensions.

Bavarian politicians, including Minister-President Markus Söder, have called for drones to be shot down immediately in such cases, though experts have voiced caution over the potential risks of such measures.
