A young woman was caught shoplifting in Bad Bentheim on Monday, which led to the discovery of a large chocolate hoard.

Police were called out to a supermarket in Lower Saxony on Monday afternoon after the 24-year-old had attempted to hide over 600 euros' worth of chocolate in her bag. She was spotted trying to sneak past the cash desk and was later caught by police.

After officers took down her details and completed the police procedure, the woman was let go. But that there was further drama to unfold.

Officers observed the woman making her way to a nearby car with another occupant sitting inside. They decided to search the vehicle, and were surprised to discover it contained a stash of around 113 kilogrammes of Lindt and Milka chocolate bars. The sweet treats were confiscated and an investigation was opened to determine their origin.

In their public police report, the local police force wrote about the incident, using it to highlight the risk of shoplifting, although they admitted it made a nice change from finding drugs or alcohol. The police are now seeking witnesses who may be able to supply further information on the theft.
