Police in Trier are investigating after a 10-year-old girl found a GPS tracker hidden in a teddy bear keychain handed to her by a man on a bus.

On Tuesday, a 10-year-old girl was approached by an older man on a city bus in Trier. According to the Trier police department, the man sat down next to the girl, handed her a keychain with a small teddy bear attached, and told her she could keep it.

When the girl got off the bus, she examined the keychain more closely. She noticed a small zipper and, upon opening it, suddenly discovered a GPS tracker inside.

The 10-year-old immediately discarded the keychain with the GPS tracker and alerted her mother, who then informed the police about the incident.

Though the Trier police department remained tight-lipped about the case, they seemed confident from the beginning that the man was probably not a "child-lurer". Nonetheless, they praised the girl and her mother, who "reacted in an exemplary manner" and thus enabled the police to investigate quickly.

At around 5pm that day, the local police announced that, with the help of video footage from the bus in question, they had been able to identify the man "without a doubt." The 64-year-old man reportedly admitted during an initial interrogation that he had given the girl the keychain.

The exact circumstances are still under investigation, but the police emphasised once again that there are no indications of a pedophilic motive.
