Firefighters from the Grand Duchy were deployed in Achouffe to help their Belgian colleagues extinguish the wildfire, which spread quickly due to the dryness of the forest. According to Belgian reports, 45 firefighters from Luxembourg were present in the scene.
The fire started at around 2.30pm near the Brasserie d’Achouffe. On Sunday, firefighters managed to extinguish the last flames shortly before 2.30am.
Firefighters had to deal with difficult conditions, with a shifting wind in a very dense forest area. The authorities deployed a large fire-fighting force and had to fell several trees to stop the flames from spreading.
Stéphane Thiry, commander of the rescue zone of the Province of Luxembourg, stated that around 100 hectares were affected, representing one of the biggest wildfires of the last ten years.
The local authorities said that the cause of the fire was still unknown and that no homes had been affected. However, conditions for the wildfire were rife, as the lack of rain during weeks increased the chances of a wildfire in the area. No one was injured by the flames.
