A second victim, critically injured in the shooting at a wedding in Thionville on Sunday, has died, bringing the toll to two dead and four injured.
Nancy's Specialised Interregional Jurisdiction (Jirs), which is handling the investigation, announced this development on Monday, focusing on organised crime.
The shooting occurred around 1am on Sunday at the Eden Palace, a wedding reception hall in a commercial area of Thionville.
Four people attending the wedding were shot, and two have now succumbed to their injuries.
"For two other victims, initially hospitalised in critical condition, their lives are no longer in immediate danger," said Vincent Légaut, deputy prosecutor in Nancy, in a press release. Additionally, two other individuals sustained minor injuries, mainly from glass shards.
Approximately 100 guests were present at the wedding, which drew attendees from the Metz metropolitan area, according to Thionville Mayor Pierre Cuny.
The attackers, described as three hooded men dressed in black and heavily armed, appeared at the entrance and fired several dozen rounds at people outside. The attackers arrived in a 4x4, and fled before emergency services arrived.
A police source suggested the attack was likely a settling of scores related to drug trafficking, indicating that the wedding itself was not targeted, but specific individuals at the event were.
The Lorraine border area has experienced violence related to drug trafficking before. In May 2023, a shooting between rival gangs in Villerupt, Meurthe-et-Moselle, resulted in five injuries.
