Two people were injured at the Futuroscope theme park in France when the car of a ride they were seated in caught fire.

The incident occurred on Friday at the theme park near Poitiers, the leisure park said in a statement. Images of the blaze were posted to social media.

A lithium battery situated under the second car of the Objectif Mars spinning coaster caught fire around 10.16am on Friday morning. "The fire was quickly brought under control by the teams on site", the park's management said.

"Two women were injured and attended to by emergency services," a spokesperson for the park told AFP.

One of them "was particularly struck by the flames, suffering injuries to the ear and neck".

A video filmed by a witness shows two men with fire extinguishers extinguishing flames under the cars. Cries of panic of visitors can be heard.

The other woman suffered injuries to her shins, according to the newspaper Le Parisien.

"The attraction was immediately shut down...and visitors were quickly evacuated," the park stated. The ride was subject to daily checks, as well as all maintenance recommended by the manufacturer", said Futuroscope.

The theme park opened in 1987 and welcomes nearly two million visitors per year, making it the fourth busiest amusement park in France after Disneyland Paris, Parc Astérix and Puy du Fou.
