Mandatory identification numbers are being introduced in an effort to fight bike theft across France.

The unique identification number will be linked to the contact details of the bike owner, which is supposed to facilitate the return of stolen or lost bikes. The system will thus allow public servants to directly contact the right people when a bike is found.

The new measure will come into effect on 1 January 2021 for all new bicycles, and on 1 July 2021 for all second-hand bikes sold in stores. The identification number will eventually be introduced for private sellers as well.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, bike purchases have been on the rise in France, but theft remains a major issue. It is currently estimated that around 300,00 households fall victim to bicycle thieves every year.
