More than 30 years after the murder of an American tourist in Koblenz, German authorities are now poised to solve the case. On Tuesday morning, court proceedings began against an 81-year-old man, who has been formally accused of murder by the German public prosecutor’s office.

The suspect was arrested at a care home at the end of February this year after new evidence emerged. Recent DNA analysis has reportedly provided compelling proof that he murdered the woman in 1994, leaving little room for doubt according to investigators.

The man has a long history of sexual offences and has previously served prison sentences for such crimes. During his pre-trial detention, he reportedly confessed to the murder.
