The girl and her family had been trick-or-treating in the Little Village neighbourhood in Chicago. The family was on a popular trick-or-treating destination, namely 26th Street, when the shooting occurred. According to the Chicago Police Department, a group of men chasing another men began firing. The girl was caught in the crossfire and was shot in the lower neck. She was dressed up as a bumblebee when she was shot.
She was immediately taken to hospital and is “fighting for her life”, according to Sergeant Rocco Alioto. He went on to tell reporters, according to CNN:"This is unacceptable. It’s a 7-year-old girl that’s trick-or-treating with her family out here and happens to get shot because a group of guys want to shoot at another male while there is a street full of kids trick-or-treating.”
The police do not have anybody in custody and have appealed for information, as well as for the shooter to turn themselves in.
A video on posted on Facebook shows the moment gunshots were first heard and young people in masks running. It is unclear whether they are connected to any suspects.
