There were significantly more traffic jams on German motorways in 2023 than in the previous year, according to German Automobile Club ADAC.

The duration of delays totalled 427,000 hours in 2023, a quarter more than in 2022 but still a sixth less than in 2019 before the Covid pandemic, the club reported Tuesday.

Busiest day: Friday, 29 September

The busiest days of the week were Wednesday and Thursday, with the least traffic jams on Mondays and weekends.

However, the busiest day of the year was Friday, 29 September.

Many drivers made use of the long weekend ahead of German Unity Day, traffic experts explained. A similar amount of traffic was reported on the Friday before Pentecost weekend and on the Wednesday before Ascension Day.

Monthly traffic jam hours continued to increase throughout the summer, from 20,000 in January to 43,500 in July, August and September.

Longest traffic jam: 56 kilometres

The longest traffic jam was 56 kilometres and occurred in January after the onset of winter on the A61 near Nahetal.

The ADAC registered 691 traffic jams on German motorways with a minimum length of 20 kilometres.

As in previous years, the federal state with the most traffic jams was North Rhine-Westphalia with almost 34%, followed by Bavaria with 15% and Baden-Württemberg with 10%.

Among the national motorways, the A3 was the leader in traffic jams, followed by the A8 and the A10, the ring around Berlin.

Surprisingly, the ADAC found that the €49 train ticket had no impact on reducing commuter traffic.
