The incident occurred in Pagny-sur-Moselle on Thursday afternoon. An 18-year-old man and a young woman were fishing on the shoreline of the Moselle.
For unknown reasons, both of them fell into the water, France Bleu Lorraine Nord radio said. Witnesses quickly alerted emergency services.
The young woman was found alive and transported to the hospital. Her friend, however, did not survive the incident. Emergency services found his dead body on Friday afternoon.
An investigation has been launched.
