Dutch PM Mark Rutte announced the “rotten measure” to decrease the maximum speed limit on all Dutch motorways from 130km/h to 100km/h last November. Today this new limit was introduced. However, cars will still be able to drive up to 130km/h between 7pm-6am.

The Netherlands were found in breach of EU law on protecting nature reserves from dangerous nitrogen oxide levels. The construction sector was already on hold due to this, but now is able to continue works thanks to the new measure.

Many drivers are upset about the new law, but studies have shown that lower speeds can actually cause less congestion, with automobilists driving closer behind each other and braking less abruptly.
