Kids love it, riders hate itZigzag road marking in Kayl-Tétange sparks debate

What might appear to be a botched road marking job is actually an intentional – and contentious – design choice in a Luxembourg municipality.

An unusual zigzagging road marking between Kayl and Tétange has drawn attention – not for poor workmanship, but by intentional design.

The deliberately uneven line, first reported by an RTL.lu reader, forms part of a soft mobility initiative in the municipality.

Mayor Jean Weiler confirmed to our colleagues that the irregular marking was painted this way purposefully as a pilot project. “This first painted line is a trial”, Weiler explained: “It’s not meant as a divider, but to guide pedestrians through our landscape.”

The municipality, which boasts “many scenic spots” according to the mayor, plans to enhance the concept with additional pictograms in coming weeks. The marking currently winds through a park connecting the two towns.

While some residents have embraced the quirky feature – with children particularly enjoying following the path on scooters – the initiative has not been universally welcomed. Weiler acknowledged receiving complaints from cyclists unimpressed with the unconventional design.
